Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Patrick Robert “Pat” Cain was born April 7, 1944 to Charles and Teresa (Rowe) Cain in Mitchell, South Dakota. He graduated from Montrose (South Dakota) High School in 1962. He received his Civil Engineering degree in 1967 from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD. He completed his Master’s Degree in Transportation Engineering from Iowa State University in 1976.

Pat married Gloria Baumgartner on December 28, 1966 in Rapid City. He was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1967 to 1969 and was stationed in Quang Tri, Vietnam. He was employed with the Iowa Department of Transportation as a civil engineer and by the time of his retirement in 2002, had spent over two decades as the Director of Transportation Data.

During the half century he lived in Ames, Pat was a former member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and was active in the Fellows Elementary School PTA. As a current member of St. Cecilia Church, he served as a Eucharistic minister, head usher and was active with the Knights of Columbus, in addition to the Parish Council. He was actively involved in St. Cecilia School projects and activities. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a Boy Scout leader, treasurer for the Cyclone Corvette Club, and an instructor for the Ames Genealogical Society. He coached Ames Park and Rec and competitive club soccer teams, announced for the Ames High School girls soccer games, and was an NCAA track timer, as well as a Special Olympics track coordinator.

Pat enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and instructed countless family and friends how to water ski and snow ski. His other passions included camping, hiking, taking walks, home projects, being outside, and working on cars and boats. He was seemingly the only person who always read the instruction manual front to back.

Pat died at 71 years of age on Saturday, August 15, 2015.
