Joseph W. Leonard

Joseph W. Leonard, 92, of Maxwell died of heart failure Friday, January 3, 1997 at Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 7, at 10:00 a.m. at Ashton Chapel near Mingo.

The Rev. Robert Hinshaw, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in Ashton Cemetery.

Mr. Leonard was born September 12, 1904 in Collins, the son of Charles A. and Annie Emmaline (Streeter) Leonard.

He had been a resident of Maxwell since 1975, having moved there from Mingo. He had farmed and then worked for the Jasper County Road Construction and Maintenance, and was a park ranger at Ashton Wildwood Park until 1975, when he retired.

He graduated from Mingo High School and attended Iowa State University. He was married to Veda Akins on December 24, 1925 in Runnells. He attended Ashton Chapel.

Survivors include three sons, Charles G. Leonard of Santa Maria, California, James R. Leonard of mesa, Arizona and Clyde E. Leonard of Sioux City; a daughter, Jo Anne Owen of Maxwell; a brother, Ralph A. Leonard of Newton; eighteen grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Veda in 1983; a daughter, Mary A. Goff; one brother and three sisters.
