Lydia Inman Fjeld, formerly of 516 26th Street in Ames, died peacefully on March 13, 2015. She was born on June 28, 1918, the daughter of Stephen and Iva (Dickson) Inman, of Collins, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Fjeld in August, 2001; her brother, Wallace Inman in February, 1993; her sister, Ann Elliot in April, 2004; a stepson, Ellis Fjeld; and her parents. She is survived by three stepchildren, Wendell (Eddie Dodge) Fjeld, of Guatemala, Saline (Brian) Davies, of San Gabriel, California, and Carolyn (Walter) McSherry, of Kent, Ohio; four nieces, Jennifer (Tom) Pansing, of Omaha, Nebraska, Lynda Youngman, of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Janis Elliott, of Carlisle, and Margret Elliott, of Iowa City; seven grand-nieces and nephews; twelve great-grand-nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Lydia graduated from Collins High School in 1934, from Iowa State College in 1940 and 1950, and from the University of Minnesota in 1963. She taught Home Economics in secondary schools in Iowa and Illinois and at the University of Arizona, Michigan State University, Oklahoma State University, Iowa State University and Northeast Missouri State. While at NMSU, she was appointed the first female Dean of Graduate Studies in the State of Missouri. She is listed in Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World. She retired as Dean of Graduate Studies Emeritus from Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University in 1983.
Lydia co-authored a college level Household Equipment textbook which was widely used through three editions in the 1970s and 1980s. She was a member of a number of state and national professional and honor organizations, serving as advisor or officer in several. Her travels took her to four continents, some twenty countries and all but two of the United States.After retirement, Lydia served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Thousand Oaks, California, and was active in the Ames Ward Relief Society and for a number of years in The Family History Center. In 2000 and 2001, with the help of her husband whom she married in 1989, she wrote two family genealogy books. In 2004, she wrote “Reminiscing,” a collection of vignettes about life in her parental family.
Lydia spent her final years at Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa.
Lydia left her body to the Mayo Foundation in Rochester Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 21, 2015 at The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, 2524 Hoover Avenue, Ames, Iowa.
