John Joseph Zagar was born July 30, 1928 in Slater, Iowa to Anton and Mary (Abramovich) Zagar. He graduated from Slater High School in 1946 where he was a star baseball and basketball player. John continued playing baseball for the next several years in Ames and Slater.

John married Sharon Accola at the Slater Methodist Church in 1949. John was a avid sports fan and loved to play golf. He volunteered for fifteen years on the Slater Fire Department. John also served as the secretary and treasurer for the Slater Methodist Church. He retired from Munn Lumber Company in 1990 after 40 years as a Credit Manager.

John passed away Friday, March 13, 2015, surrounded by his family, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames from a heart attack.

John is survived by his wife, Sharon Zagar; his son, Phillip (Lynne) Zagar, of Ankeny; his daughters, JoEllyn (Tom) Bennett, of Ankeny and DeAnn Zagar, of Ames; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his sister, Josephine DeBates; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rudy Zagar.
