Obituary from Memorial Services of Iowa, Ankeny, Polk County, Iowa:
Max V. Frandsen, 70, passed away March 2, 2013, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a brief battle with esophageal cancer. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 8. Visitation will be 2 PM with memorial service to follow at 3 PM at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City, Iowa. Burial of cremains will be at a later date at Story Memorial Gardens in Ames.
Max was the first born of Arnold and Ida (Curtis) Frandsen on February 17, 1943, in Ames, Iowa. Although disabled from birth as a result of spina bifida, Max excelled in Gilbert Public Schools and graduated from Woodward High School with the class of 1961 where his classmates helped him negotiate the stairs in the three story building. This was long before the American Disabilities Act (ADA) mandated accessibility requirements in public buildings. A high school education was merely a beginning for Max as he went on to graduate from the American Institute of Business in September of 1963. This degree opened the door qualifying him for employment in Des Moines. He later returned to Ames to work for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 15 years before retiring on long-term disability at the age of 37 in 1980.Max's strong will served him well. He learned to drive at the age of 30 and he loved to drive his car with hand controls nearly every day. Max could often be seen sipping his morning coffee, munching on an Egg McMuffin and reading the paper in a local parking lot. He recently purchased a wheelchair accessible van to replace his Monte Carlo.
Max loved music. His favorite groups were The Beatles and ABBA and he enjoyed listening to KIOA oldies station on the radio. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago White Sox fan.
Max is preceded in death by his parents; three uncles with surviving spouses, Hjalmar Nelson of Gilbert, Iowa, and Harold Frandson and Robert Dappen of Story City, Iowa; two additional aunts and uncles, Everett and Alta (Curtis) Miller of Hedrick, Iowa, and Russell and Ann (Frandson) Lincoln of Corvallis, Oregon; a great nephew, Mitchel Korff of Miami, OK.
Max is survived by many people who loved and cared about him in the central Iowa area. Family members include a sister, Marilyn (Gary) McCollough of Kansas City, MO; two nieces, Gay Lynn McCollough (Robert) Korff of Norborne, MO, and Shari Ann McCollough (Chris) Albright of Kansas City, MO; two great nieces, Jenna Korff and Mackenzie Albright and two great nephews, Logan Korff and Quinton Albright; three aunts, Leah Frandson and Sara (Frandson) Dappen of Story City, Iowa, and Mildred (Frandson) Nelson of Gilbert, Iowa, several cousins and countless faithful friends including the residents of Regency Apartments where he lived independently for over thirty years.
Memorials may be sent to Israel Family Hospice House, 400 South Dakota, Ames, Iowa 50010 or Grace United Methodist Church, 624 Elm Ave, Story City, Iowa 50248.
