Obituary from Memorial Services of Iowa, Ankeny, Polk County, Iowa:

SSG Stephen John Thompson (Active), 32, of Ames, went home to the Lord, November 15, 2012.

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 23, 2012 at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.), in Ankeny. A visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., prior to the funeral. Burial with military honors will follow the service, at Ankeny Memorial Gardens

Stephen was born November 18, 1979 in Davenport, Iowa to Scott and Dee Thompson, and graduated from Ames High School in 1998.

He and Christina Sippel were married October 15, 2000, and together they had 3 children; Raven Cynthia, Richard Scott, and Eliana Dee.

Stephen enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2001, and served in operation Bright Star in 2001 and then 3 tours during operation Iraqi Freedom.

He attended Sunrise Baptist Church in El Paso, TX, where he also served as a deacon. He loved interacting with children, especially babies. He was known as the "Baby Whisperer". He enjoyed video games, hunting, fishing, and of course, Mountain Dew.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Christy, and their three children, a grandmother, Marjorie Cortesio, of Centerville, IA, his parents, Scott and Dee Thompson, of Ames, IA, a brother, Stuart (Laura) Thompson, of Killeen TX, a sister Shawna Thompson, of Ames, IA, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, and maternal grandfather.

The family will be directing memorials to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Research hospital in Houston, TX.
