Orlin "Jim" James Hanson
October 20, 1928 - June 6, 2014Jim Hanson was born October 20, 1928 to Otto J. and Alma (Lovestuen) Hanson in Roland. He attended Roland High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree in forestry from Iowa State University. He served in the United States Army in Korea. He had a pilot’s license, served on the city council. He did constructions work, building, remodeling, repairing many houses in the Roland Area. He managed the farm work and took care of the “Trees for the Future” that were planted on land that was not suitable for corn/bean crops. He was a talented singer and sang in the choir and as a soloist sometimes in Norwegian as well as in English. He also owned, operated a sawmill, and sold lumber. He spent his recreation time fishing and hunting ---he especially enjoyed fishing in Alaska.
Jim married Marilyn Stafford of Burlington/Ames, Iowa on October 10, 1965.
Orlin James Hanson died June 6, 2014 at Bethany Manor in Story City.
He is survived by his wife and their two sons, James (Anita) of Killeen, Texas and Rick (Elena) of Redfield, Iowa; two granddaughters, Jessica Wong and Sarrah Hanson; one brother, Norman of Leroy, Minnesota, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harley and a niece, Cheryl.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bergen Lutheran Church, Roland, Iowa or Iowa State University Extension and Outreach-Forestry, Ames, Iowa.
