Claire Jay Keigley was born June 17, 1941 to Frederick Claire and Helen Marie (Pulley) Keigley in Marshalltown, Iowa. Claire graduated from Radcliffe High School in May of 1960. He married Virginia Strum on August 19, 1961 in Ellsworth. Claire worked at the Ellsworth Coop Elevator until November of 1966, when he started with the Ames Police Department. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Juvenile Officers Institute in 1974 and set up and ran the Juvenile Division for the Ames PD, becoming the departments first Juvenile Officer. Claire was promoted to Detective in 1974 and then to Detective Corporal in 1992. Over the course of his police career, Claire received numerous certificates for specialized training and taught in Police Sciences and Juvenile programs.

Claire's activities and memberships are numerous: Ascension Lutheran Church in Ames where he served on the church council, once as president and twice as vice-president; American Legion Post #37 - Sons of the American Legion; Ames City Employee Council; Central Iowa Peace Officers Association, which he represented at the NCPRS conventions in Chicago in 1988 and San Francisco in 1989; Story County Juvenile Justice Association; Board of Directors for the Ames Boys and Girls Club of Story County; Iowa State Police Association, which he was elected to the Board of Directors in 1982, President of the Board in 1989, First Past President in 1990 and left the board in 1991 to join the ranks of past presidents; Board of Directors for the Jerry Rabiner Memorial Boys Ranch from 1982 to 1994 and served as President of the Board in 1992; The Sullivan Brothers' Award of Valor for Peace Officers and Firefighters Commendation Committee for nine years; Little League coach; and several other committees and ad hoc committees on Capitol Hill.

Claire was given The Ames Humanitarian Service Award twice, the first time for the initial fund raisers in 1988 and 1989, which took the financial position of the Jerry Rabiner Memorial Boys Ranch from a negative to a positive; and the second time for performing CPR until the paramedics arrived on a man having a heart attack during church, thus saving the man's life. Claire rewrote the Iowa Search Warrant into the Uniform Search Warrant For All Iowa Peace Officers. This bill was sponsored by the Iowa State Police Association and was introduced to the Iowa Legislature by then Senator Ralph Rosenberg. The bill passed unanimously and was signed into law in 1984 by Governor Terry Branstad. It is still in use today. Claire received several other commendations throughout his career with the Ames Police Department, with his retirement coming in 1994.

Claire worked part time for 29 years for Midwest Coaches Inc., full time for 9 years, driving over one million miles across the United States, Canada and Mexico. His most famous drive came in 1994, in a truck tooling down main street as an extra in the film, "The Bridges of Madison County."

Claire passed away at 72 years of age on April 28, 2014 at Israel Family Hospice House.

Claire is survived his wife, Virginia Keigley, of Ames; five children, Terry (Lisa) Keigley, of Ames, Danny Keigley, of Nevada, Angie (Ken) Markley, of Gilbert, Kelly Safly, of Slater and Scott (Dani) Keigley, of Oronoco, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Israel Family Hospice House or Ascension Lutheran Church.
