James Charles Almquist was born on February 25, 1932 to Ernest and Elvera (Falk) Almquist in Essex, Iowa. Jim graduated with a BS in Animal Science from Iowa State University in 1954 and then with a MS in Rural Sociology in 1962. He married his wife, Anne, on March 18, 1955. Jim is most well-known for his love of everything Iowa State Cyclones. Every year was a good year to be a Cyclone in Jim's world.

Jim spent much of his time recruiting high school students to Iowa State. For 35 years he worked for the Iowa State University Extension Service. During that time he was involved with the ISU Alumni Association, the National Cyclone Club and the 4-H Foundation Board of Directors.

Jim volunteered his time with Iowa HOBY, Special Olympics Iowa and Lutheran Services of Iowa. He also served on the board for Iowa Lutheran Hospital. A large part of Jim's life was his 30 years in the Kiwanis Club. He worked as an advisor in the Urbandale Middle School Builders' Club and Urbandale High School Key Club. Jim also jumpstarted the Builders' Club at the Ames Middle School.

Jim has received the Iowa HOBY Outstanding Commitment Award, the ISU Faculty Citation, the Merle Hay Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award and the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award.

Jim passed away peacefully in his sleep the morning of May 1, 2014 at 82 years of age. He was diagnosed with ALS in February of 2013.

Jim is survived by his wife, Anne; his four children, Mike (Rhonda) Almquist, of Essex, Sue Rice, of Omaha, Julie Almquist, of Omaha and Jill (Jerry) Loghry; seven grandchildren, Ashley (Troy) Gilmore, of Omaha, Alicia (Austin) Pratt, of Council Bluffs, Aaron Almquist, of Houston, Texas, Adam Almquist, of Ames, Michael Merical, of Omaha, and Sarah and Hannah Loghry; and three great-grandchildren, Shain, Sophie and Ava.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the ALS Association or the Iowa State 4-H Camp in Jim's honor.

A graveside service is planned over Memorial Day weekend in Essex, Iowa.
