ELAND BATES

Eland Bates, son of Elnathan and Margaret Bates, was born on a farm near Nevada in 1880, where he spent his youth. He received his formal education at Commercial College in Des Moines.

In 1911, he married Myrtle B. Gardner of Bagley. They lived on a farm near Napier in Boone County until he retired and they moved to Ames. To this union were born four sons and five daughters.

Mr. Bates was a member of the E.U.B. Church in Nevada and the Napier Methodist Church. Later he transferred his membership to the First Methodist Church, Ames.

He had been in failing health for several years and died April 25, at the age of 83.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle, seven children, twenty six grandchildren, one great grandson and two nephews.

Services were held at the First Methodist Church in Ames. Burial was in the Nevada Cemetery.
