Telma Leland

Telma Gabrielson Leland was the first daughter born to Bergit (Carlson) and Emanuel Gabrielson on August 7, 1920 in Story City, Iowa.

Telma was confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church in 1935 and graduated from Story City High School in 1939. Telma participated in orchestra, glee club, band string quintet, mixed chorus and pep club. While in high school, she also played string bass for the Iowa State Symphony Orchestra.

Telma married Glenn S. Leland (Buzz) on July 6, 1940. They made their home in Ames until 1941 and then moved to Pasadena, Ca, where Buzz accepted a position with Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. The couple returned to Ames after Buzz had served in the United States Air Force during WWII. They raised four children: Pamela Ann, Stan Gabrielson, Sue Kaye and Tracy W. Telma was a homemaker and sewed most of her children's clothes. She also enjoyed trapshooting and knitting and after her retirement, learned to crochet and quilt.

In 1964, she fulfilled her life-long dream of becoming a nurse, and graduated in the first class of Ames School of Practical Nursing. She truly enjoyed her role as full time L.P.N. working at Mary Greeley Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit, the Post-Operative Recovery Room and the Emergency Room.

Telma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Buzz in 2004, her daughter-in-law Diane Anderson Leland in 2007 and her sisters Mrs. Virgil (Solveig) Raymond and Mrs. E.E. (Evelyn) Loan.
