Thelma Leland
September 15, 1927 - June 2, 2013

Thelma (Wheeler) Leland was born on her mother's birthday September 15, 1927 in rural Victor, Iowa. She was the ninth of ten children of Pearl and Harvey Wheeler. The family moved to rural Cambridge when Thelma was three months old. Thelma graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945. She worked at Dahl's grocery in Cambridge and Donnelly Marketing in Nevada. In March of 1948, she married her high school sweetheart, Arnold Leland, after his 2 years of service in the Navy. To this union four children were born.

Thelma was a stay at home mother until their last child started school and then she became a self-employed house painter for the next 32 years. She was a faithful worshiper at the Church of the Brethren in Maxwell and later at Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren in Des Moines.

Thelma passed away June 2, 2013 at her home in Cambridge at 85 years of age.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold Leland of Cambridge; her children, Joetta Leland of Ames, Julee (Troy) Petersen of Huxley, and Kurt (Lisa) Leland of Huxley; daughter-in-law, Carol Leland of Virginia; and eight grandchildren, Kollin Leland, Kylee (Adrian) Emens, Kent (Amanda) Petersen, Brice Petersen, Devin Leland, Jenna Leland, Jayden Leland and Tate Leland. Also surviving her is her brother, Lyle (Karen) Wheeler of Cambridge.

Thelma was preceded in death by her son, Kirby Leland; and her granddaughter, Brooke Leland.
