Peter Durby

Peter Durby was born July 27, 1858 in Dyrness, Fjeldberg, Norway, and died at his home south of Roland September 20, 1935, at the age of 82 years, one month and 23 days.

He came to America in 1871 to Lisbon, Ill., and in 1878 he came to Story county. Since that time he has lived in this community and for the past 57 years on the same place.

He was married to Maren Simonson on November 2, 1893 by Rev. C. B. Jacobson.

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and twelve children, Emma (Mrs. Albert Olson) Frost, Minn.; Palmer, Buffalo Center; Lydia (Mrs. James Sandsgaard) Story City; Stella (Mrs. Harvey Nassen) Roland; Archie, Nevada; Enoch, Story City; Laurence, Roland; Ruth (Mrs. Victor Duea) Roland; Bernice (Mrs. Martin Caltvedt) McCallsburg; Joseph, Palma and Benjamin at home. He also leaves 25 grandchildren and one brother and two sisters in Norway. Two children have preceded him in death, Leslie in infancy, and Myrtle, who died twelve years ago at the age of 17.

Mr. Durby had been failing for some time due to his advanced years and about a month ago he fell and broke a hip. Pneumonia set in from with he died last Friday.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the home and at Bergen Lutheran church, with Rev. M. O. Sumstad officiating. Interment was [at the Roland Cemetery.]
