MRS. BERTHA K. JOHNSON

Bertha Johanne Gaard was born in Tolje, Norway, on April 22, 1866, and passed away at her home northwest of Roland on Tuesday, September 22, at the age of 82 years and five months.

She came to America with her parents in 1887. Her parents were Knudt and Kristine Gaard.*

In June 1888 she was united in marriage to John K. Johnson, who preceded her in death on August 1, 1912. Surviving her are three sons, Mayer at home, Clarence of Orfordville, Wis., Bervin of Story City; four daughters, Clara, Isabel and Christine at home, and Carrie of Des Moines; also one brother, Rev. A. K. Gaard of Story City, on sister, Christoffa Gaard of Minneapolis, Minn, and four granddaughters, June and Anne Johnson of Orfordville, Wis., and Joyce and Leona Johnson of Story City.

Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon, September 24, at Bergen Lutheran church in Roland, with Rev. Allen E. Nelson, officiating, and Rev. Thor Sigmond of Kensett, assisting. Pall bearers were L. T. Sande, L. J. Ritland, O. L. Ose, Weir Erickson, John L. Christian and Herman Wicks. Otto J. Hansen sang two solos at the church. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery.

Relatives from a distance in attendance were Christoffa Gaard of Minneapolis, Minn., Rev. Thor Sigmond of Kinsett, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Johnson, June and Anne of Orfordsville, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Gaard of Ottumwa, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Jordan Johnson of Slater.
