TRAGIC ENDING OF JOY RIDE OF TWO ROLAND YOUNG MEN

GAYLORD JOHNSON DEAD, ALFRED OSTREM INJURED AND COUPE WRECKED

Special to the Journal.

Roland, Jan. 31--Gaylord Johnson, 25, of north of Roalnd, was instantly killed and Alfred Ostrem was knocked unconscious and was painfully bruised up, when a Ford coupe in which they were riding, turned over on the road, at a point east of Gilbert on the Wilson highway, Sunday afternoon at 7:00.

There were no other cars nearby at the time and Ostrem, after he had regained consciousness during the early morning hours, was unable to give any cause for the fatal accident, which occured on a long stretch of smooth highway.

Excessive speed was doubtless the cause of the accident and fatality.

Motorists coming along shortly afterwards, found the car overturned on one side of the road and both of the men thrown into the ditch on the opposite side of the road.

Both were picked up and take to Ames, where Ostrem was placed in the hospital and the body of Johnson, who had been instantly killed, taken to an undertaking establishment for care.

Johnson is a single man and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Johnson of north of Roland, while Ostrem is a son of Mrs. T. A. Ostrem of north of Roland.

The funeral services will be held here Wednesday afternoon.

JOHNSON FUNERAL HELD

Unfortunate Young Man Buried at Roland Wednesday.

Special to the Journal.

Roland, Feb. 4--Funeral services for Gaylard Johnson were held Wednesday afternoon at Bergen's church at two o'clock. Rev. M. O. Sumstad conducted services at both the home and the church. His sermon was based on a verse from Proverbs "Boast not thyself of tomorrow, for ye know not what a day may bring." A vast crowd of surrounding relatives and friends crowded the church to the utmost, and filled the spacious lawn outside, showing he had many friends who came to pay their last respects and to bring sympathy to the bereaved family. Gaylard Julius Johnson was born on a farm near McCallsburg on July 13 1903. When but a small boy he moved with his parents, to the old Johnson homestead, west of town where he has since lived. This grim tragedy has brought sorrow and gloom over the entire community and should be heeded as an admonition by others who have been more fortunate in life. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Johnson and two brothers Lloyd of near Garden City and Henry of Philadelphia and one sister, Mrs. A. F. Commick of Lakefield all of whom were present at the funeral. The entire community express their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

Henry Johnson arived here Tuesday evening from Philadelphia having been called home by the death of his half brother Gaylard Johnson.
