Gene was born on June 1, 1914 in Woodburn to Clinton E. and Lottie (Lemon) Poush. As a child he was raised around New Virginia. In 1927, his family moved to Story County, IA where he resided the rest of his life except for the time spent in the service. On April 23, 1941, Gene was drafted into the U.S. Army. He trained in Louisiana and served until September, 1945 when he was honorably discharged at Jefferson Barracks, MO. Gene spent 27 months in German prison camps being liberated by the Russians in 1945. When he returned home, he started farming - his first love. After 10 years, he decided to do something new. Gene started in road construction building new black top roads. He worked for Cessford Construction in LeGrand until his retirement in December of 1979. He then started working for Leonard and Dean Dueland and continued to work until the age of 85. Gene hated to give it up as "it was the best job ever with good bosses". On March 31, 1946, he married Veletta A. McAtee at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. Gene was a longtime member of the Memorial Lutheran Church and the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48 in Nevada. He and Veletta enjoyed dancing.

To this union two children were born - son, Daniel G. Poush of Nevada and daughter, Diana Lynn Sage who preceded Gene in death on March 23, 1988. Other survivors are three grandchildren Stacey (Chad) Nelson of Nevada, Shelby Poush of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Justin Sage of Pennsylvania; great grandchildren Taylor Lynn and Isaac Alexander; two sisters-in-law Jeannie Starbuck of Ames and Judy Rasmussen of Grand Island, NE; and a brother-in-law, Kurt Haas of Eldora.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Veletta on April 19, 2008, daughter Diana, a granddaughter Tia Lynn Poush in 1976, twin brother Dean in 2005, a brother and sister in infancy, two sisters, Nellie White and Hazel Cheville.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 9 from 2-4:00 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada.

Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Lutheran Church, Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Bliss Cancer Center or Amanda the Panda.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Gene and his family.
