Lurene Spatcher
March 17, 1921 - August 25, 2012

Lurene Elnora Augusta Lloyd Spatcher, 91, formerly of Ames, died of natural causes Saturday, August 25, 2012 while a resident at Bethany Life Community in Story City. Funeral Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 1:30 PM with burial to follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St, Ames on Tuesday evening from 5-7 pm.

Lurene was born on the family farm in Ledyard, IA of March 17, 1921, the daughter of Warren and Emma Busch Lloyd. She attended school and graduated salutatorian from Ledyard High School in 1939. While in school, Lurene played girls basketball and played in the state tournament as an 8th grader. She married Cecil Spatcher on May 12, 1941 and they recently celebrated 71 years of marriage, something for which Lurene was very proud.

Lurene was the anchor of her family, relying on her strong faith since childhood and loving common sense. She was a practical, intelligent and generous woman with friends and family alike. She was a meticulous homemaker, skilled seamstress, and great cook. She was a selfless woman with a great sense of humor and an infectious, cheerful laugh. She was a wonderful role model to everyone whose lives she touched. She treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and never forgot a birthday. Lurene had been a member of First United Methodist Church in Ames since 1957 and was very active in her church, and also in various clubs and organizations.

Lurene is survived by her husband of 71 years, Cecil Spatcher of Ames; three children, David (Patti) Spatcher of West Bend, WI, Sandy (Mark) Hempe of Ames and Julie (Russell) Reid of Youngsville, NC; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Lyla Lloyd and Kathryn Lloyd, both of Ledyard, IA and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Alfred Lloyd, Marvin Lloyd, Edward Lloyd and Donald Lloyd.
