Florence Esther Walter
August 14, 1922 - September 10, 2011Florence (Flo) E. Walter, 89, formerly of Nevada passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2011 of cancer at the Woodlands Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 17 at the First United Methodist Church, 1036 7th Street in Nevada with Pastor Kevin Leveck officiating. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Flo was born, the third of four sisters, to Elmer and Mary (Wiedeman) Rasmusson on August 14, 1922 in Blandon, IA. Flo graduated from Manson High School in 1939. She graduated in 1941 from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI). She taught in Ottosen and Charles City before returning to school in 1946 to pursue a degree in social work. Flo attended William Penn College and was a graduate student at the University of Iowa. She served as a social worker in Des Moines and Fort Dodge before settling in Nevada in 1953. There, she met Harold Walter. They married on June 21, 1953 in Manson. From then until 1984, Flo worked in various capacities in the Story County Welfare office, taking some time off to raise her three sons. For several years she served as Director of Story County Social Services.Flo's greatest joy was being with family. She was a devoted mother to three sons and adapted to the role of being the only woman in the household. She enjoyed camping and fishing trips and innumerable family outings, especially picnics at Hickory Grove Lake. Flo expressed her love through the care she gave her family. She valued education and hard work and was generous with her time in family, church, and community service.
Flo traveled widely, visiting all fifty states and most Canadian provinces. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada where she taught Sunday school, Bible school, and sang in the choir. Florence was a member of P.E.O. for over 50 years. She played in numerous bridge clubs and especially loved the social time with her friends.Flo is survived by her three sons, Thomas and Brenda Walter of Chesterfield, Missouri, David and Alyson Walter of Topeka, Kansas and John Walter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandsons, John, Matthew, and Christian Walter; her sister Dorothy Stamper of Humboldt, IA; brother-in-law, Charles Krusentsjerna of Rochester, New York and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Flo was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Mary Rasmusson, her mother and father-in-law, Ernest and Frieda Walter, her sisters Lucille Janssen and Mary Krusentsjerna, brother in-laws Richard Stamper and Gotlieb Janssen, and her husband of 52 years Harold E. Walter on October 2, 2005.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 16 with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth in Nevada.
A memorial fund has been established in Florence's memory for the First United Methodist Church in Nevada.
