From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Mildred Thompson

September 16, 1928 - August 2, 2011

Slater, Iowa

Mildred Marie Thompson, 82, of Slater passed away Tuesday Aug. 2. at the Israel Family Hospice House. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4 at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church, Huxley. A Celebration of Millie's life will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 also at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.

Mildred Marie Thompson was born in Clinton, IA September 16, 1928 to Katherine and Elmer Petersen. Mildred attended North High School in Des Moines and after graduation in 1947 was employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield in Des Moines for seven years. She met the love of her life, Sherman D. Thompson and they were married on September 8, 1953.

Sherman and Millie raised five children on the farm just one mile north of Alleman until their retirement in 1993. Millie was involved throughout her children's school years at North Polk High School serving as the Secretary and Vice-President of the North Polk Band Mothers and also serving as the Treasurer of the North Polk School District. Millie also spent time doing what she loved the most and that was serving the Lord. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Bible School at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley where she was also involved in Circle and Stephen Ministry. As Millie became more homebound she still served in a volunteer capacity for the church, making phone calls to fellow members on both the funeral committee and prayer chain.

We are grateful for Millie's gifts that she has shared with us throughout her life. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Left to cherish her memory is her loving family which include her husband of 58 years, Sherman of Slater; sons, Dennis (Carol) Thompson of Carroll, IA, and Donald of Cedar Rapids, IA; daughters, Katie (Marty) Ball of Tarpon Springs, FL, and Susan (Scott) Ramfjord of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren, Matthew (Jeni) Thompson of Creston, IA, Anne (Chris) Chapman of Janesville, WI, and Miles Ramfjord of Ankeny, IA.; great-grandchildren, Luke, Grant, Alli and Hayden; and one sister, Doris Halverson of Mesa, Arizona.

Millie will be reunited in heaven with her parents and son, Richard, who preceded her in death in 1969.

The family would like to thank Iowa Lutheran Hospital, The Israel Hospice House, family and friends for their thoughts, prayers and care of Millie over these past weeks. Memorials may be made to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church or The Israel Hospice House in Millie's name.

Online condolences may be made at www.soderstrumadams.com. Soderstrum Riis Funeral Home in Slater is assisting the family with arrangements.
