John Luchan

BORN: July 24, 1925

DIED: August 7, 2011

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

John Luchan, 86, of Ames, died at his home on Sunday, August 7, 2011. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 10 at Adams Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday, August 11 also at Adams Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

John was born July 24, 1925 in Mason City, IA to John and Kristina (Clagola) Luchan. He graduated from Mason City High School, Mason City Junior College (NIACC), and Iowa State University. He served in the Army during WW II and again in the Korean Conflict. On September 16, 1950 he married Donna M. Houston of Kensett, Iowa.

After moving to Ames in 1954 to attend Iowa State he also began working part time in the “Engineering Dept. of the City of Ames. Following graduation he accepted the postion of the City of Ames Building Official and served in that position for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

Johne loved to do woodworking, watching the Chicago Cubs Baseball games, chauffeuring grandkids and more recently great-grandkids, to and from school and other activities, and socializing with the coffee group at HyVee every day.

He will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Donna, of 61 years; daughter, Karen Stephan and husband, Scott, of Ankeny; two granddaughters, Lindsay Pickering and her husband, Clint, of Ankeny and Amy Stephan of Cedar Rapids; three great grandchildren, Jayden, Chloe, and Hudson Pickering; sister, Mary Ann Jacobson of Clear Lake, IA; sister-in-law, Joyce Frederiksen of Ankeny, IA; nieces, Elizabeth Langill and husband, Jim, of Wheaton, IL and Sherry Leydens and husband, Bob, of Altoona, IA; as well as great nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Michael and Charles; mother-in-law, May Houston; and brother-in-law, Lewis Frederiksen.
