Larry D. Shaeffer, age 70, of Huxley, Iowa died suddenly on Sunday, December 18, 2011. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21. at the Ballard Middle School, 509 Main, Huxley. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 22, also at the Ballard Middle School.

Larry was born July 25, 1941, to Frank and Lois (Martin) Shaeffer in Boone, Iowa. He grew up in Kelley, Iowa, and graduated from Ballard High School in 1959. On November 17, 1962, he married Beverly Nerness. Larry obtained a Bachelors and Masters degree from Iowa State University and a Specialist degree from Drake University. He taught and coached at Scranton, Iowa, and Story City, Iowa, before becoming the principal and boys basketball coach at Ballard High School in 1970, retiring in 1999. Following retirement he worked for Story County schools and DMACC in the vocational program.

Sports were a major part of his life. In 2000 Larry was inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was also in a partnership in S & S Insurance Service of Huxley. Family meant everything to Larry.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Huxley; one son, Matthew (Michelle) of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 3 grandchildren, Gage, Grant, and Tatum all of Eden Prairie; and two brothers, Tom (Sharon) of Huxley, and Steve (Jane) of Marion, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
