From Story County Watchman April 26, 1901

On Saturday afternoon James Eckles, son of Frank J. Eckles, living north of this city, while out hunting met with the misfortune of shooting himself while handling the gun over to another boy who was with him the charge entering his bowels and instantly killing him. An inquest was held before Justice Welty and the verdict was in accordance with the facts. His age was eleven years. The funeral was held on Monday and the remains laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery. The family only recently moved to this county and this is a sad commencement for them. The funeral was attended by relatives from Chicago among which was Ex-Comptroller of Currency, Jas. H. Eckles, of Chicago, Geo. H. Eckles and C. A. Palmer, also of that city.
