From Story County Watchman December 31, 1897

Last week, Wednesday afternoon, Major Shields* received word from Indiana, that his mother Ruth Shields was very sick and not expected to live. Mr. Shields and little son Curt got ready and started immediately from Maxwell on the six o'clock train. But did not arrive in time to see her alive, as her death occurred the same evening at four o'clock. Lung fever was the cause. She leaves a brother* and two sisters* besides grandchildren and other relatives in Story Co., where many friends sympathize with them in their loss.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Major Shields" is Anderson Shields. Mrs. Shields surviving brother is John Tyler Smith of Story County and her two surviving sisters are Rachel Ann (Smith) Dunahoo and Abigail (Smith) Nowning both also of Story County.
