From Story County Watchman August 15, 1890

An accident occured on the farm of Lew James, four miles west of Ames, on the 5th, by which their little daughter lost her life. Mr. and Mrs. James were preparing to attend a church social, and had dressed the little girl and told her to run and play until called. When they went to call her they received no answer. They began investigation, and upon entering the barn saw a horrible sight. Upon the floor, her white dress be spattered with blood, lay the little child, a heavy cornshelling machine pinning her to the floor. She was at once released, but life was extinct.
