From Story County Watchman August 29, 1890

Saturday evening Wm. Shoemaker suddenly died. He was taken during the evening with a sort of pain and paralysis set in and in a few hours he passed away. The remains were cared for at the expense of the county and burial took place Sunday. His age was about sixty years. he had been a soldier of the rebellion but had never joined any post or identified himself with any of the organizations. He has now gone to the place from whence no traveler returns and as a veteran will be long remembered by them and those who give good will to all who were in the wars.
