THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, November 6, 2010.

Christian J. Derks Jr., 85, of Ames, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at Mary Greeley Medical Center, following a brief illness. Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. Burial will follow in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Christian Derks was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Stanberry, Mo., to Chris and Margaret Derks. He married Patricia Anne Holiday on Sept. 1, 1951.

He served during World War II (1943-46) with the Air Transport Command in Burma and India theaters of operations. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.

He attended Creighton University and the University of Omaha in business administration. He was a real estate broker and appraiser for the Veterans Administration and Federal Housing Authority. He retired in 1991 from the Iowa Department of Transportation, after 25 years as a review appraiser. He was a member of the American Appraisal Society.

He is survived by six children, Cheryl (Allan Lines) Derks, of Omaha, Neb., Sally (Stew) Moore, of Ankeny, Mary Sue Derks, of Kansas City, Mo., Nancy (John Christensen) Derks, of Stanhope, Jim (Carrie) Derks, of Eden Prairie, Minn, and Jane (Joe) Hahn, of Ames; and ten grandchildren, Sean Moore, Alexandra Moore, Kaylee Hahn, Ethan Hahn, Nathan Derks, Riley Derks, Henry Derks, Jeremy Derks, Cody Christensen, and Jenny Christensen.

Memorials may be directed to St. Cecilia Catholic Church for memorial masses.
