Dale F. Johns, 78, of Slater died July 25, 2010 at Mary Greeley Medical Center. A memorial service will be 3:00 Thursday, July 29 at Adams Funeral Home.

Dale was born December 10, 1931 to Jack and Pearl Johns in Des Moines. He was raised and schooled in Des Moines.

On August 5, 1950 he married Peggy Loewenthal-Grimm. He served in the military during the Korean War. He worked for NW Bell for several years before he retired. In 1969 he won the National Yellow Pages Service Salesman Award. After he retired he continued to work, most recently at the Ames Tribune and Bear Marketing.

He was a member of the Slater Park Board and instrumental in getting the original Slater Pool built. He was a member of the American Legion. He and Peggy enjoyed several years of square dancing. He liked fishing with anyone that would go with him. The last several years he enjoyed watching the ISU Women’s BB team. His favorite thing to do was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Dale is survived by his wife, Peggy; his children, Mike (Jeanette) of Kelley, Vickie Johns of Kansas City, Tom (Vicki) of Kelley and Kathy (Steve) Reece of Slater; sisters, Jackie Miller and Judith Johns, both of Des Moines; sister-in-law, JoAnn Loewenthal; grandchildren, Kelly (Scott) Brown, Tyler, Alex, Mat, Marc, Casey Johns, Ashley, Jordan, Jenna Tripp, Sarah (Sam) McDeid, Erin, Mallory, Megan & Rebekah Reece; great-grandchildren, William McDeid & Travis Brown; nieces and nephews, Jennifer (Pat) Mealy, Amy Miller, Dan (Helen) Loewenthal, David Loewenthal, Janet Apter, Steve (Helen) Loewenthal; and his lifelong friend, Dick (Ruth) Weatherly.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack, his mother, Pearl, his half-brother, Ed, his son, Mark, his brothers-in-law, Bob Loewenthal and Jerry Miller.

Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Hospital or Slater City Parks.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
