Robin Orr, 54, of Savoy, Ill., daughter of former Iowa State University men’s basketball coach Johnny Orr, died Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Greater Peoria Specialty Hospital in Peoria, Ill. Funeral arrangements are pending at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory in Urbana, Ill.

Robin Orr, 54, of Savoy, Ill., died Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Peoria Specialty Hospital following a five month battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, 1900 Philo Road, in Urbana, Ill.

Robin Orr graduated from the University of Michigan in 1977 and completed graduate studies with a doctorate degree in nutrition, marketing and gerontology from Iowa State University in 1992. She earned All-American honors as a water polo player, in addition to top national honors as a swimmer and international honors in kayaking and war canoe.

For more than 17 years, Dr. Orr has been employed by the University of Illinois as an Extension specialist and director of programming EFNEP/FNP, overseeing grants, budgets, programs and services that have improved the lives of more than one million of our most vulnerable Illinois citizens. On March 19, 2010, Governor Pat Quinn designated “Robin A. Orr Day” at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, to acknowledge and celebrate Robin’s accomplishments and to present the first annual “Robin A. Orr Community Partnership Awards” that recognize program coordination, collaboration and outreach to improve access to food in Illinois communities.

She is survived by her husband, Sam Hill and children, Samantha and Mylan Hill; her parents, Johnny and Romie Orr, of West Des Moines; and the families of three sisters, Jenny and John Davis, of Lemont, Ill., Leslie and Craig Boylan, of Ames, and Becky Montgomery, of Ankeny. Nieces and nephews include Susan (Davis) and Ron Riedel and their children, Daniel and Angeline, of Lockport, Ill., John Henry and Rachel Boylan, of Ames, and Jamie and Alexa Montgomery, of Ankeny. Additional family includes mother-in-law, Veardie Mae Hill, of Country Club Hills, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Tanya Hill, of Country Club Hills, Ill., and Lucinda Hill, of Aurora, Ill.; and brothers-in-law, Theo Hill and Steven Hill, of Chicago, and Curtis Hill, of Little Rock, Ark., and their respective families.

In lieu of flowers or for those wishing to make donations, the family requests contributions be directed to the Robin Orr Food and Nutrition Education Fund at the University of Illinois that will further educational opportunities and services in the field of nutrition and wellness.
