Dorothy Hazel Hovel, 92, of Manly, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, surrounded by her family. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 1, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway in Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera and Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly.
Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m., with a rosary lead by Pat Dixon at 6 p.m. followed by a scriptural wake service, Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., in Manly.
Dorothy H. Hovel was born March 5, 1917, in Estherville, the daughter of Alfred D. and Martha (Betz) Rose. Dorothy and her parents and brother, Tom, moved to Manly in 1922, and she graduated from North Central High School in Manly in 1935. Dorothy attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and graduated with a two-year teaching degree in 1939. During her long teaching career, she taught students at elementary schools in Dumont, Buffalo Center, Indianola, Ottumwa, North Central, Holy Family School in Mason City and Northwood-Kensett.
She married Leo H. Hovel June 11, 1946, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly and lived on South Broadway for many years. She and Leo were parents to two daughters, Mary K. and Cyndy. Dorothy returned to school and taking courses in Mason City and attending summer school, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Drake University in Des Moines.
Dorothy was a longtime member of Sacred Heart parish in Manly, particularly as a member of Our Lady of Victory Guild. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Iowa State Teachers Association.
After her retirement in 1979, she and Leo enjoyed traveling around the U.S. by bus and spending time on her hobbies of quilting, embroidery, knitting, gardening, baking, and playing cards with friends. Following Leo’s death, April 24, 2001, she continued to live in her home in Manly until she moved to Homestead Assisted Living in Mason City in November 2008. She enjoyed living at the Homestead and her family wishes to thank administrator Mary Montgomery and her staff for their caring service during her time at the Homestead. Dorothy was recognized there for her award-winning sugar cookie recipe.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Mary K. Mahoney and her husband, Stephen, and her grandson, Edward Mahoney, of Gilbert, and Cyndy Hovel-Wright and her husband, Mike Wright, of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Ruby Rose, of Rochester, Minn.; along with several nieces and special friends, Dick and Nancy Koob, of Manly and their children, Connie Koob, of Milwaukee, Wis., Brian and Emily Koob, of Rockwell, and Carolyn Scheppler, as well as other extended family members and friends.
Her parents; her husband, Leo; and her brother, Tom, preceded Dorothy in death.
