Robert Vernon Ray was born April 24, 1922 at his parent’s home in Fort Dodge IA. His parents were Nellie (Cuff) and Matthew Ray and Bob was the baby of seven children. Bob attended schools in Fort Dodge quitting school in 10th grade to help his father in his mattress shop, Ray’s Mattress Shop in the Flats of Fort Dodge. Other jobs he held included The Clean Towel Service and he worked on military ships in Portland, OR for a year. He returned to Fort Dodge and resumed working in his father’s business which was now Ray’s Mattress and Upholstery Shop. He met Myris Joy Myers in 1943 and they were married June 29, 1944. To this union, three daughters were born, Madonna Ellen, Mary Katherine and Deborah Anna.

Bob enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting and in later years took up golf. Bob and Myris moved from Fort Dodge to Marshalltown in 2003 and have resided at The Embers Retirement Community.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Myris; his daughters: Madonna (Dale) Opdahl of Redondo Beach, CA, Mary (Tom) Curley of Marshalltown and Deborah (Paul) Malsom of Nevada, IA; four granddaughters: Vanette Metzger, Jennifer (Troy) Kopriva, Allison (Brock) Johnson and Heather Malsom; three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service and Mass will be held at the Embers Retirement Community Room on Friday February 19 at 10am with Father Jim Miller officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice or The Embers Retirement Community.
