Lois Irene Underland, 86, of Story City passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Burial followed in the Story City Cemetery. There was a visitation of family and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday Sept. 21 at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
Lois was born Oct. 1, 1922 to Vaughn and Elizabeth (Blakeley) Ray in Boone County, Iowa. She graduated from Jewell High School in 1940. She received her teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers College, now known as University of Northern Iowa. She taught for 10 years at Lytton Consolidate School in Lytton, Iowa and at Washington Central School in Webster City.
Lois married Orville Underland on August 17, 1952 and they lived on a farm near Jewell for 50 years. In 2002 they moved to Story City.Lois is survived by her daughter Janis and her husband Walter Williams of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Chantelle Williams and Anthony Williams; one brother Lloyd and his wife Betty Ray; brother-in-law Ray Nicholson; sisters-in-law Sylvina Ray and Dolores Anderson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Orville in 2005; brother Herbert Ray; and sister Margaret Nicholson.
Lois was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, Bethesda Lutheran Church Women, and the National Association for the Visually Handicapped.
