THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Duane L. Smith, 79, of Ames, died Friday, June 26, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Visitation with the family will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada and will continue until the start of the Memorial Service at 8 p.m. Inurnment will be in the Sheffield Cemetery, near Story City, at a later date.

Duane was born July 22, 1929, in Mingo, the son of Seth and Allie (Manship) Smith. Duane graduated from Shipley High School in 1947. Duane was united in marriage to Phyllis Matsen, Aug. 8, 1948. Phyllis preceded Duane in death on March 23, 1996. Duane was a salesman and owned Smitty’s Sales and Service in Ames. Duane enjoyed inventing tools, designing mechanical things, tinkering, selling and working. He was a former member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, in Ames.

Duane is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Walter (Debra) Smith, of Ames; Jerry (Ruth) Smith, of Ames; Scott (Jeanne) Smith, of Ankeny; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Seth (Elaine) Smith, of Roswell, New Mexico.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis; and one sister: Jean Kinyon.

Memorials may be made to the Duane L. Smith Memorial Fund.

The Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is handling arrangements.
