Ben P. Durby July 12, 1921 to November 28, 1994

Ben P. Durby, 73, of Roland died Monday of heart failure at his home in Roland.

Durby was born south of Roland to Peder and Maren (Borwick) Durby. He married Lois Stone on March 17, 1968. A resident of the Roland area for most of his life, he was a farmer and was employed by the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames. He retired from the lab in 1989.

He was also a Sunday School superintendent for the Bergen Lutheran Church for 42 years, a member of the Roland Council, a former member of the Bergan Church Council and a timekeeper for the Roland and Roland Story schools for 52 years.

He is survived by his wife of Roland; three sons, Dennis Stone of Marshalltown, Steven Stone of Ames and Larry Stone of Story City; two daughters, Debra Olive and Susan Clarridge, both of Story City; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three sisters, Berniece Caltvedt of Story City, Ruth Duea of Roland and Palma Beaty of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.

Services will be held Thursday, Dec. 1, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland with the Rev. Conrad Rolland officiating. Burial will be in the Roland Cemetery.

Visitation was held Wednesday in the Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home in Story City.

Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home of Story City was in charge of arrangements.
