Fern Cullor, 95, of Unionville, MO, passed away at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville on Monday, January 12, 2009. She had been a resident there for a brief time.
Fern Hazel (Chinn) Cullor was born February 6, 1913 in Powersville, MO, the daughter of Elmer and Laura, (Sell) Chinn who preceded her in death. She graduated from Powersville High School in 1930 and on August 16, 1931 she married Cecil Blanchard. He preceded her in death on March 15, 1960. On September 18, 1995 she married Arthur Cullor and he preceded her in death on January 20, 2000.
Fern worked at the Powersville Post Office and was half owner of C & B grocery in Powersville. After Cecil's death she moved to Des Moines, IA, where she worked as a dietician for the Iowa Children's Home Society. She then worked five years as a dietician at the Mitchellville Girls Training School. She moved to Trenton, MO, where she cared for elderly in their homes and then she moved to Nevada, IA where she also cared for the elderly in the Nevada and Ames, IA, area. Fern moved back to Putnam County in 1995.
Fern was a member of the Lucerne Christian Church in Lucerne, MO. She was a lady who always carried herself with grace and dignity. She was a good businesswoman and had a determined spirit. Fern also had a good sense of humor.
Fern is survived by two sons, Rex Blanchard and wife Kay of Powersville, MO, and Leedrue Blanchard and wife Jo Ann of Nevada, IA. Surviving grandchildren are Vicki Walter, Wesley Blanchard, Shari Caruth, Marcy Juarez, and Jason Blanchard. Ten great grandchildren also survive and they are Joel Walter, Mathew Walter, Miranda Blanchard, Kassie Blanchard, Krissie Blanchard, Kelsey Blanchard, Alison Caruth, Adam Blanchard, Daniel Blanchard and Anna Blanchard. Her great-great grandchild is Gavin Blanchard. Fern is also survived by a step-son, Jim Cullor, and by three step-daughters, Betty Fleshman, Jean Cullor, and Nancy Ewing.
Others who preceded Fern in death were her brother, Ira Chinn, and her sister, Faye Wilks Hunt.
Funeral services for Fern Cullor will be Friday, January 16th at 1:00 p.m. at the Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home in Unionville, MO, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Powersville Cemetery in Powersville, MO. Memorial contributions are suggested in lieu of flowers to either the Lucerne Christian Church or the Powersville Cemetery and may be entrusted to Playle and Jones Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO, 63565.
