THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 28, 2009.

Robert Edwin Larson, 87, of Story City, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City. A time of fellowship will follow.

Robert Edwin Larson was born March 16, 1922, in Ames, the sixth of eight children of Lars Peter and Elizabeth (Lange) Larson, Danish immigrants. He grew to manhood on the family farm in Grant Township near Ames. He was very proud of his Danish heritage.

A 1940 graduate of Ames High School, he joined Howard Flying Service of Ames, becoming a commercial pilot, flight instructor, and charter pilot. During World War II, Army and Navy air cadets based at Iowa State College received their primary flight training with the Howard operation. He enjoyed teaching and was recognized for his thoroughness. He was called to active duty with the Navy in 1944. As a primary flight instructor, he was stationed at Naval Air Stations at Norman, Okla., New Orleans, La., and Peru, Ind.

On June 14, 1945, he wed Vena Mae Lewis at First Methodist Church in Spencer. After release (not discharge) from active duty, Bob and Vena Mae established their home on a farm near Story City. There they welcomed the birth of three sons, Bruce, Donald and Kevin. The joyful years of raising their sons were precious and fulfilling.

Donald Robert perished in an airplane crash in 2000 near Moorhead, Minn. That loss has had a lasting impact on the family.

Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren are great blessings and deeply loved.

Bob is survived by Vena Mae; Bruce and Kevin and their respective families; one sister, Virginia Larson Hash and husband, Bill; and one brother, Frank Larson; along with many dear relatives and treasured friends who share the loss of a quiet, good-hearted and very kind man.

Memorials will be given to Ronald McDonald House, Grace United Methodist Church, or the donor’s choice.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is assisting the family with arrangements.
