Alice J. Gjerde, 80, of Story City passed away Monday, April 6, 2009 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services were held Friday, April 10 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City. Burial followed at the Roland Cemetery. There was a visitation for family and friends one hour prior to the service.

Alice Gjerde was born May 26, 1928 to Iver and Anna J. (Espeland) Gjerde in Hamilton County, Iowa. She worked as an administrative assistant and had lived in Roland since the late 1960's. Alice was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Roland and a member of Friends 'n Service, Roland Legion Auxiliary, and the Roland Library Board. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, playing bridge and doing jig-saw puzzles. Alice was honored as the 2008 Bethany Manor Queen.

Alice is survived by a nephew, Roger (Virginia) Swenson of Ankeny; a niece, Diane Swenson of Story City; and cousins, Birdelle Post of Nevada, and Jen Ambrose of McCallsburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three, brothers, Carroll Gjerde, Palmer Gjerde, and Irwin Gjerde; two sisters, Ardis Gjerde and Amy Swenson; and two nephews, James Swenson and Paul Swenson.
