THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 28, 2009.
Walter Chatfield, 75, of Ames, died Sunday, April 26, 2009, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a funeral service at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 29, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, in Ames. Visitation also will be from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home in Muscatine, with a 2 p.m. graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery in Muscatine.
Walter Chatfield was born Dec. 30, 1933, on a farm near Muscatine, the son of Frederick and Anna (Irwin) Chatfield. He graduated from Muscatine High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. He then received a master’s degree from the University of Iowa and did graduate work at The Ohio State University. He was a member of Iowa Lodge #2 A.F. and A.M. in Muscatine. He was professor emeritus of Iowa State University in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, where he taught French and Spanish. He also worked in the Department of Education at Iowa State University, overseeing student teachers across Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Pat, of Ames; nieces and nephews, Lynn Kelly, Kirk Chatfield, Ellyn Shoppa and Rebecca Phillips, all of Muscatine, and Amanda Dacy, of Grandview.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Anna Lucille Zorn; and one brother, Rolland Frederick Chatfield.
Memorials may be directed to the Walter Chatfield Scholarship at Iowa State University, and Alzheimer’s Association Greater Iowa Chapter.
