Harlan Carlson, 91, of Ames, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Harlan R. Carlson, 91, of Ames, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

Harlan R. Carlson was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Kelley, to Harold and Rachael (Dahl) Carlson. He married Mary Holmes May 3, 1939, in Northwood.

He was a postal carrier for 36 1/2 years. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, where he ushered more than 45 years. He enjoyed his children and grandchildren, fishing and hunting, and had belonged to a bowling league. He also belonged to the National Association of Rural Carriers.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Ames; six children, Thomas “Tom” (Mary Ann), of Tucson, Ariz.; Gary (Diana), of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Norman (Kathy), of Ames; Dave, of Rigby, Idaho; Susan Carlson, of Apple Valley, Minn.; and Nancy Johnson, of Edina, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myrna Alfred, of Tucson, Ariz., and Ruth Markham, of Thomaston, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be directed to Bethesda Lutheran Youth National Gathering Fund or a charity of your choice.
