Roger Bursell Swanson 73, or rural Nevada, died Wednesday at University Hospital and Medical Clinics in Iowa City due to complications of surgery. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada, with Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Roger Bursell Swanson was born in St. James, Minn., to Walter E. and Iva (Baker) Swanson. During World War II he served in the Army 103rd Infantry Division. On Dec. 26, 1950, he married Joyce M. Corbin in Omaha, Neb. He retired in 1978 as a milkman for Anderson Erickson Dairy in Des Moines. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, William F Ball American Legion Post No. 2209 and Teamsters Local No. 387. He had been a resident of Nevada for the past 36 years and before that he had lived in Ames. He enjoyed mowing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Terry Swanson of Sioux Falls, SD. and Mike Swanson and John Swanson both of Nevada; one daughter, Kathy Smith of Kalispell, MT; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia Canady of Newton.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. Friday with family present from 5 to 7, at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.
A memorial fund has been established for the Arthritis Foundation or the First United Methodist Church in Nevada.
