THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, February 19, 2009.
Robert Forbes Doran, 60, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at his home after a brief illness. Per Bob’s wishes, private services will be at a later date with Father Ev Hemann presiding. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone. Memorials may be given to First National Bank of Ames to be in turn donated to Earth Justice (Earthjustice.org) or World Wildlife Fund (worldwildlife.org).
Bob was born July 21, 1948, in Duluth, Minn., to Dr. John and Mary Elizabeth Forbes Doran. He grew up in Iowa City and Ames, graduating from Ames High School in 1966. A bachelor’s degree and medical degree were earned from the University of Iowa. He served an obstetric and gynecology residency in Richmond at the Medical College of Virginia. He co-founded the Doran Clinic for Women with his father in 1978. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology at the clinic for the past 30 years.
He was a man of many hobbies and interests. Some of these included music, antique books, butterflies, shells and entomology. He was an avid supporter of Cyclone and Hawkeye athletics. Playing the bass guitar and banjo in the Specialists band was a favorite pastime. Also, he found pleasure in collecting rare antique books with steel engravings from around the world. Tennis was his favorite participation sport. He also loved working at his farm on evenings and weekends with his wife. He was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Iowa Medical Society, Iowa Wildlife Society, Nature Conservancy, and St. Cecilia Church.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Donna Jacobson Doran. They were married June 15, 1974, in Boone. They have two children, Dana Elizabeth, of La Jolla, Calif., and Michael John, of Dallas. He also is survived by one sister, Leisa Doran, of West Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Betty Doran.
Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
