THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, January 23, 2009.

Gaylord Oppedal, 77, of Chandler, Ariz., passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at Chandler Regional Hospital, to be with his parents, brothers and God. Services will be at a later date.

He was born July 29, 1931, in Stanhope, to Torkel and Hannah (Anderson) Oppedal. He grew up on the family farm with two sisters and seven brothers until joining the U.S. Army. He served his country from February 1952 through January 1954.

He later met his wife of 24 years and settled in the state of Washington, and they had three children, Kirstin, Craig and Karen.

He settled later in life in Arizona just as he had always wanted, and was very happy there enjoying the hot weather and beautiful surroundings. He was a proud “Lutheran” and attended a Lutheran church in both Arizona and Washington state.

He went by the nickname “Opie” and was known for his quick wit, sense of humor and “good looks.” Everywhere he went, he had friends that loved him.

During the time he lived in the Phoenix area, he kept very busy with a very good friend, Jo Christensen.

He is survived by his three children and six grandchildren that reside in Washington state; two brothers, Stan Oppedal and Willard Oppedal, of Iowa; and two sisters, Inez Duft and Esther Lund, of Iowa. He is also survived by many other family and friends.
