Ray G. Anderson, 81, of Grinnell and formerly of Cambridge, died of congestive heart failure on Thursday, Jan. 9, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Cambridge on Sept. 8, 1921, to Ed and Sylvia (Larson) Anderson. He was raised in Cambridge and was a 1939 graduate of Cambridge High School. He later attended an aircraft mechanics machinist school in Des Moines. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force during World War II and served in the European Theatre. He married Marilyn Swanson on March 24, 1944, in Louisville, Ky. They farmed in Jasper County. He was a 30-year employee of Maytag Company in Newton, retiring in 1976. He retired from farming in 1986. He moved to Grinnell in 1990. He was a member of the Lutheran faith and the U.A.W. No. 997.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Grinnell; two daughters, Marcia Iverson of Grinnell and Mary Lynn Armstrong of Kent, Wash.; three sons, Ronny Anderson of Kellogg, Dennis Anderson of Grinnell and Terry Anderson of Montezuma; one brother, Irwin Anderson of Cambridge; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Anderson; one sister, Edna Terrell; two brothers, Byron and Maurice Anderson; and one grandson.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 13, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Burial was in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Ray G. Anderson Memorial Fund.
