Betty M. Penny, 83, died Monday, March 31, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, at First United Methodist Church in Ames, of which she was a longtime member. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Betty M. Penny was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Wheaton, Kan., to Margaret (Nightingale) and David Clark. She grew up near Onaga, Kan. As a teenager, she was recognized by the Kansas 4-H office for her war and peacetime efforts. She was awarded a trip to the first wartime National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. She later served as a 4-H leader in Ames. She enjoyed making quilts, growing flowers and playing bridge. She was married to Dr. Lowell H. Penny, who worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Iowa State University and later with Asgrow Seed Company. They also spent two years on assignment for the U.S. State Department at a research station in Kitale, Kenya.
She is survived by two sons, Norman (Ana), of Hayward, Calif., and Robert, of Painesville, Ohio; one daughter, Marilyn (Mike) Rader, of Story City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Lawrence (Vera), of Onaga, Kan., Edward (Teruko), of Dallas, and Ross (Linda), of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Loral (Kenneth) Kauffman, of Littleton, Colo.; and one sister-in-law, Marilyn Clark, of Cooperstown, N.D.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell; and one brother, Delbert.

Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames is assisting the family with arrangements.
