Lewis J. Petersen, 82, of Ames, died Sunday, March 30, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. An informal celebration of Lew's life will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames.

Lewis J. Petersen was born April 26, 1925, in Schleswig, the son of Broder and Selma (Bendixen) Petersen. He graduated from Schleswig High School in May 1942, and attended the University of Iowa until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from flight school and was sent to Lowry Air Force base in Denver as a flight instructor on B-29s. After his discharge, he attended Morningside College and on Oct. 25, 1946, he married, Arlene Burow at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. The two of them farmed and owned several businesses in Battle Creek until moving to Fort Collins, Colo., in 1970, where they owned and operated Poudre Valley Mobile Home Park. They moved back to Iowa in 1980. In 1984, they became sorority parents at Gamma Phi Beta until 1998.

He was a member of the Masonic Order, Zag Ga Zig Shrine Club, the American Legion and United Church of Christ Congregational of Ames. He enjoyed family vacations, golf, fishing with his grandchildren, playing cards, sports of any kind and several coffee groups around Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene Petersen, of Ames; daughters, Patrice (Dr. Michael) Sharp, of Pender, Neb., and Natalie (Larry) Coubrough, of Loveland, Colo.; son, Kirk (Mari) Petersen, of Hampton; niece, Judee (Bob) Albert, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Chad (Sarah) Sharp, of Arlington, Neb., Dr. Justin Sharp, of Omaha, Neb., Stephanie (Matt) Carter, of North Platte, Neb., Adam (Natalie) Sharp, of Lincoln, Neb., Andrew Coubrough, of Searcy, Ark., Dustin Schwab, of Cedar Rapids, Cole Coubrough, of Searcy, Ark., Kelsey Schwab, of Waterloo, and Kendra and Hannah Petersen, both of Hampton; great-grandchildren, Luke Sharp and Cynthia Rose Carter; one brother, William (Joyce) Petersen, of Schleswig; and brother-in-law, Harold Wallace of Riverside, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Stephen; one son, Stephen; and one daughter, Cynthia Rose.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Boys and Girls Club of Ames or a charity of your choice.

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family with arrangements.
