John William Harker Sr., 86, of Ames, died Friday, June 8, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A Celebration of Life Service was at 1:30 p.m. today at Cambridge United Methodist Church. Burial was in Center Grove Cemetery near Cambridge.

John William Harker Sr. was born April 22, 1921, near Cambridge, the son of Harry L. and Levenia (Backous) Harker. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1940. He married Betty Offerman Jan. 15, 1944, in Des Moines. He was a farmer and had lived on the same farm from 1926 until moving to Ames in 1970. He retired in 1995. He was devoted to his family, the land, farming and to the care of animals. He was an avid Hawkeye fan for more than 70 years and an all-around sports fan. He was a member of Cambridge United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Betty, loved to travel and spend the winters in Texas and Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Ames; one son and daughter-in-law, John (Becky) W. Harker Jr., of Ames; one daughter, Victoria Harker, of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Erin (Mike) Halverson, of Cambridge, Matt Harker, of Ames, Brooke Harker and Katie Harker, both of Los Angeles, and Justin Harker and his fiancé, Ashley, both of Cambridge; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Delaney Halverson; one brother, Paul (Lavonne) Harker, of Cambridge; several nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Duffy, his dog.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dan Harker; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Harker; and one sister, L. Naomi Stone.

Memorials may be made to Cambridge United Methodist Church youth group.

Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
