Aug. 28, 1937 - Dec. 16, 2006

Bob Ellis Sr., 69, of Roland and formerly of Ames, died Saturday, Dec. 16, at his home of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Bob Ellis Sr. was born Aug. 28, 1937, in Ames, to Alva Lynn and Thelma Lois (Kitchen) Ellis. He graduated from Ames High School, where he was a four letter recipient. He then attended Iowa State University. He was inducted into the Ames High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 for his participation on the 1955 Championship Baseball team. He also participated in the 1955 Championship Basketball team.

Ellis married Jane E. Terhune June 28, 1957, in Gilbert. He retired from the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1994 after 38 years of service.

He was a past member of Ames Moose Lodge No. 520 and Elks Lodge No. 1626, and was the Ames Area Bowling Association past president.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Ellis, of Roland; daughters, Terri (Doug) Johnson, of Aurora, Ill., Julie (Marty) Darnell, of Ames, Jeri (Russ) Neely, of Roland, and Becky (Craig) Owenson, of Runnells; son, Bob (Leanna) Ellis Jr., of Roland; brother, Gary (Judy) Ellis, of Ankeny; uncle, William (Wilma) Smith, of Ames; grandchildren, Matt (Kim) Johnson, Adam (Mayra) Johnson, Evan Darnell, Amy Darnell, Mallory (Bryon) Neely, Morgan (Logan) Neely, Mackenzie Neely, Samantha Owenson, Emma Owenson, Jacob Ellis, Riley Ellis, Jacey Ellis, Samantha Reisinger and Sean Reisinger; and one great-grandchild on the way.

His parents preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 7:30 p.m., today at Adams Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Homeward Hospice of Ames or MDA for ALS.
