Herbert G. Rich, 78, of Marshalltown, died Saturday at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown, with the Rev. Gregory Ellcey officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines with the Rev. Richard Walters officiating.

Herb was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Des Moines, the son of Herbert E. and Gladys (Dowlin) Rich. He grew up in Des Moines, graduated from Roosevelt High School. In 1945, following high school, he attended one quarter at Iowa State College in Ames before being inducted into the U.S. Coast Guard in late 1945, where he became an electronics technicians mate 3/c in the Loran Service. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa State College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1951. After graduation, he went to work for the then Fisher Governor Company, where he worked for 38 years. He started as a product design engineer and completed his employment in 1989 as the manager of Product Engineering (valves). He married Maribel Norris of Novelty, Mo., in 1956, and after a long and happy marriage, she preceded him in death in 2001. In 2003, he entered into a happy marriage to Dorothy Alexander of Marshalltown.

He was very active in Central Christian Church, serving many elective offices and participating in many programs there. He was also one of the people who helped found Central Iowa Residential Services Inc., where he held most of the board offices at one time or another and was also a member of the MR/DD Advisory Board of Marshall County. He was a member of the Marshalltown Noon Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Alinda Stelk of Lincoln, Neb.; one son, Clayton, of Carroll; two stepdaughters, Dee Hoewing, of Camp Verde, Ariz., and Janet Benesh, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; one stepson, Neil Alexander, of Cedar Rapids.; grandchildren Emmaly Stelk, Taylor Stelk, Mark Hoewing, Mike Hoewing, Chad Benesh, Aaron Benesh, Sean Benesh, Tina Benesh, Jason Alexander and Jeffrey Alexander; and several great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home with the family present during those hours.

Memorials may be directed to New Hope Village, Iowa River Hospice or Central Christian Church.
