THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, May 6, 2006.

Carl F. Elkin, 91, of Webster City, died Thursday, May 4, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center at Fort Dodge. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Pete Peterson officiating. Visitation was Friday at the Asbury United Methodist Church. Private committal services will be held at Graceland Cemetery before the memorial service.

Carl Francis Elkin, son of Grigg and Lucy Sparks Elkin, was born June 13, 1914, at Normal, Ill. He grew up on farms at Williams and Webster City. On July 6, 1941, he married Ruth Irene Miller at Webster City. After their marriage, they moved to
Eagle Grove and operated a service station. During WWII, the family lived at Davenport where Carl worked at the Rock Island Arsenal. Following the war, he drove a bulk gas delivery truck. They moved to Clarion, where he owned and operated a gasoline delivery service. In 1951, they started farming north of Webster City. Carl loved farming and made it his life's work. He especially enjoyed farming side by side with his son, Darle. He moved to the Villa Cottages at Fort Dodge in 2005. Mrs. Elkin died Dec. 29, 2004.

Carl is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Thomas Greiner of Ames; son and daughter-in-law, Darle and Carrie Elkin of Webster City; grandchildren, Shawna Greiner and her husband, Mike Marsaglia, Molly Greiner, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; Gina Elkin of Des Moines; great-grandsons, Leif Greiner and Cameron Marsaglia; brothers, Don Elkin of Webster City; Grigg Elkin of Eagle Grove; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Rachel Greiner; sisters, Lillis Elkin, Bertha Crystal, Helen Fox, Ruby Rasmussen and Viola Wearda; brothers Percy, Gilbert, Virgil and Elmer Elkin.

He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, serving on several boards and as an usher. In his custom-built woodworking shop, Carl and Ruth spent many hours turning native oak and walnut into beautiful furniture and decorative items, including confirmation gifts for Asbury United Methodist classes.

The family requests memorials to the Asbury United Methodist Church or Fort Dodge Hospice.
