Mildred "Millie" Adeline Smith 92, of Ames, died May 4 at Bethany Manor in Story City where she resided since July.
Millie was born March 8, 1914, on her parent's farm home outside of Independence. She was the daughter of Harry and Mae (Gleerup) Jensen. Millie graduated from Independence High School and went on to St. Paul, Minn., where she received her registered nurse's degree at Mounds Midway Hospital.
At midnight, Jan. 1, 1937, she walked down the aisle at the Temple Baptist Church, St. Paul, to marry William Glen Smith. Married women were not permitted to work at that time, but she was later able to continue her love of nursing in St. Paul and also at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids. During her nurses training she learned to assist others. This gift was one that she used her entire life as she reached out to others in her generous, caring way, always wanting to help.
After retiring, she expanded her creative skills by painting, selling and teaching ceramics. She especially enjoyed her work with porcelain dolls. She was talented in sewing beautiful dresses for the dolls as well.
Millie was very involved in church work throughout her life. After her children were out of school, Millie enjoyed the opportunity to travel, visiting missionaries and working on short term mission projects. She was able to go to Haiti, Ecuador, the Philippines, Israel, Kenya, Zaire, Taiwan, as well as various countries in Europe.
After only 19 years of marriage, she was left with three children to rear on her own because of Bill's death. She trusted in the Lord to be the Father in their home, and together the family made it through tough times.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, William E. and Portia Smith of Chino Valley, Ariz.; Colleen Carol and Richard "Terry" Beckloff of Lynchburg, Va.; and Roger A. and Bonnie Jean Smith of Ames. She has nine grandchildren: Angela Smith, Roberta Graver, Robert Smith, William "JD" Smith, James Smith, Jonathan Beckloff, Debora Bauerle, Emily Smith and Matthew Smith. She also has 19 great grandchildren. Her sister, Velma Boelter, also survives her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents; her brothers, Everett Jensen (in infancy), Donald Jensen and Elmer Jensen; and her sister, Norma Arnold.
She was given the gift of eternal life through faith in Christ, following a victorious battle with failing health due to old age.
Visitation is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the First Evangelical Free Church in Ames. Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Evangelical Free Church. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 10.
