THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 26, 2006.
Gerene Beatrice Peterson Eness was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Jewell. She died Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames at the age of 93. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, at Gilbert Lutheran Church. Burial will be in South St. Petri Cemetery north of Gilbert.
Gerene had been a resident of Bethany Manor for the past eight years. She was the daughter of Henry and Martha (Alfseike) Peterson; the only daughter in a family of five boys. She attended schools in Jewell and Ames. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1930. She married Eugene Eness on Oct. 1, 1933.
The couple farmed in the Gilbert area until 1957, when they moved to rural Ames. Both were employed by Iowa State University. Her interests included painting, writing poetry, working crossword puzzles, walking in the woods to enjoy nature - especially forest wildflowers - and collecting and refinishing antiques. She sang in music groups and the church choir until her hearing loss made participation no longer possible. She was an avid fan of ISU athletics.
She is survived by her children Paul (Margot) Eness, Janice (Jack) Miller, Linda (Marty) Rickard, Kirsten (Cliff) Barta, and David (Debi) Eness; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Bernard, George, Harold, Henry and Milton Peterson; one grandson, John Flaherty; son-in-law Chuck Flaherty; and her husband, Eugene Eness.
The visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Gilbert Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be donated to the Bethany Manor Good Samaritan Fund or Israel Family Hospice House.
Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
